Creating Vibrant Spaces: The Impact of Art on Our Environments and Well-Being
Some of you know that I dealt with clinical depression near the end of my civil engineering career. Lots of pressure, little reward, cold winters, and darkness all led to a personal crisis. My body and brain had enough. I needed a change.
The change came in the form of a decompression trip to California in an art bus. I fitted an old airport shuttle bus with a huge drafting table looking out the back window. A bed between the seats and a coffee pot was all I needed. But I took plenty of art materials and bought more when I reached San Diego.
I focused on art, journaling, and getting healthy. Painting and photography helped me relax. I filled sketchbooks with drawings of what I encountered along California’s coast. I visited Yosemite National Park in winter (even though I hate the cold) and saw snow through a different lens.
A person needs a release, a relief valve to open when things get difficult. Many people find that relief through exercise or by talking to friends. I walked. I walked the beaches. I hiked the Southern California trails and even crossed the Pacific Crest Trail a couple times.
Vacations don’t come often enough, and when they do, the time spent is savored. I take a lot of photographs to bring home and look back on. I think creatively painting those memories is healing. I think hanging those memories on the wall is inspiring. In my office, I had artwork that I made, but it has occurred to me that specific artwork is needed. Art that inspires you. Art that lifts you up. Art that enables you to go on, even though the day sucks and you feel desperate.
Change your space. Change your environment. Bring art into your environment, even if it’s a child’s painting of your family. Maybe especially a painting of what or who you love. Our well-being can be affected by our surroundings.
