These are a curious casting because of the way they refract light. A ray of light bends as it enters a different medium (water, resin, air) causing a change in appearance. Light entering the bottom of a pentagonal pyramid is refracted five times, once for each surface of the pyramid.

Icosahedron

Here’s an interesting puzzle like object, the Icosahedron. It rests in a stable position on one of the twenty equilateral triangles that compose its geodesic spheroid shape. The triangle is a perfect building shape. Maybe you have seen a geodesic dome like Biosphere2 in Tucson, Arizona. That equilateral triangle is the principal of the outer shell construction.

Making these Icosahedron has been a lesson in precision (and frustration). Fitting the triangles together works well when they are exactly the same size. Designing a 20° bevel on all three edges makes the thin surfaces touch more completely. An interlocking system would be great but making 1/8″ x 1/8″ x 1/16″ tabs and gaps would be very tedious. I use a pentagon shaped jig to hold parts together at the correct angle while setting up. Removable tape also helps force the pieces together in a tight fit.

Definition: Your favorite photo under a clear resin bubble. I combine your favorite person or pet picture with a three-inch semisphere poured in crystal clear resin. This creates an attractive paperweight or ornament for your desk, table, bookshelf or nightstand.

The properties of a clear sphere will enlarge what is visible inside the sphere. These lovely domes frame, protect and present your photo in a simple attractive way. The photo is visible from all angles above the base (one) or equator of the sphere (two photos back to back). A semisphere is half of a sphere which can also be called a hemisphere.

Why do we call half a circle a semicircle and not a hemicircle?

I like the idea of these half sphere or full spheres with photographs because of the personal nature. The photo is special to you or the recipient of your gift. We have so many photo prints lying around that could benefit from a frame but frames need to be hung or they tip over when you dust. The object is simple yet elegant.
