Old But Beautiful is Amazing

This photograph of two ice plant flowers along the beaches of Southern California remind me of ourselves. Nancy and I have raised our four children and now we are retired (except we both work part time in order to keep our savings). Age and beauty are not mutually exclusive as you can see by these flowers. I made a color print of this photograph while in Los Angeles and gave it to my “Skin and Beauty” doctor. He removed some skin cancer from my arm before I could continue my trip.

All About Us

My wife and I met in Eugene, Oregon when we were both 22. We married there and took a honeymoon to Victoria, British Columbia. We’ve moved back and forth from Oregon to Iowa to Oregon to Nebraska to Oregon to Nebraska again! Nancy put me through school at Oregon Tech and Iowa State. I’ve worked for the government, a mapping company in Portland, OR and private sector civil engineering firms in Omaha, NE.

Still Growing Strong

Our kids are grown and we see them often. We love to travel for visits and short vacations in retirement. We both work some but spend a lot of time in our old charming house with a fireplace. We have the Oregon cozy fireplace in an old brick house in a great neighborhood of a large small town in the friendly Midwest. We made life the best we possibly could, and we are still greatly in love.

Omaha is Home

We live in Nebraska because of friends. We wanted to live in Oregon because of scenery. The midwest is where Nancy grew up and we wanted the same type of childhood for our family that she had. Living in a neighborhood with friendly people who care about others is the core of America’s midwest. Older homes under trees with birds singing makes a good reason to stay just where we are as we retire. We plan and take trips to National Parks and we love driving across this beautiful country.

My Art Philosophy and Style

As a landscape artist I’ve always loved mountain or coastal scenes that captivate and awe the senses. Many places can be considered beautiful, even Nebraska. In my compositions I like vertical relief so I have painted dams with water gushing from the spillway and trains bearing down on the viewer.

Choosing your subject carefully is the beginning of a successful painting or sculpture. A lot of time is commited when that decision is made. So, its not a flat panorama of corn, although I have seen some remarkable level land open sky paintings by others.

My artwork tends to be tight and geometric. I’ve tried to loosen up, and I can, sometimes. I think I need the right subject but a good artist can work with bland subjects. Curves, lines, shapes, overlap, and transparency are my elements.
