Understanding Prism Rainbow Makers: How SunRain Works

Like most single prisms, SunRain disperses spectrums of visible light. You could think of “disperse” as “sort.” White light is a combination of all visible colors. Color is a particular wavelength. If an artist wants to paint a blue sky, she is choosing 450 nanometers for that part of the visible spectrum. Red is on the opposite end of the light spectrum at about 700 nanometers.

Light Sorting in Action

The prism sorts white light into a range of visible wavelengths (distance between peaks of light waves). You see a spectrum when white light enters the prism facet at just the right angle. Artificial Light Experiments

Can you make rainbows at night or when it’s cloudy? I’ve done a lot of tests with type of light, lenses, cardboard tubes, hexagon grids, distances, and aperture sizes. Xenon light was the best type of light if it was strong (around 4300K full-spectrum). Aperture had the most effect on clarity. Nothing beats the sun because it is a) white light / full spectrum, b) narrow like a beam, and c) small aperture for concentrated source. Sunlight through your window into a shady room has the most dramatic effect I’ve ever seen! Spectrums land on everything. They are slanted and stretched or close together and vibrant, but all in many different shapes.
