Small watercolor paintings are done on 10″ x 14″ Arches 140 lb cold press paper for $100 each. I practice using this size because it allows plenty of room to build a composition and the opportunity for landscape or portrait orientation. The time commitment is less and I try to finish it in one go. Watercolor is a fascinating medium. Pay attention to the direction and volume of water moving across the paper and from your brush. The water carries the pigment so watching is important for mechanical reasons as well as appearance. The timing of a wash for example is important for making a next move. Wet into wet creates some beautiful abstract artifacts but it can also make back-runs and blooms. I work with my paper at a slight tilt on a board and I work from light to dark in stages. I save the white of the paper for lighter tones and paint thinly without white paint.
I can make paintings at any dimension but these will be a different price. Large watercolor paintings are typically 26″ x 18″ on Arches 140 lb cold press. I stretch larger paper to the tightness of a drum so my volumes of water do not buckle the page.
if you have a photo of your vacation spot then I would love to try painting it for you. No commitment. If you like it then you can buy it, if not then I’ll add it to my inventory.
If you would like to discuss a no commitment commission then please contact me:

Watercolor painting titled “California in Winter” (18″x26″ painted in studio). This is my ideal view of orange orchards in Fresno Valley looking east to Sierra Mountains covered in snow. Oranges are ready to ship back east for Christmas. Orange trees are trimmed in cubes which make them look like full orange crates ready for shipping.
